The University of Newcastle congratulates and celebrates all Australians recognised in the 2021 Australia Day Honours, in particular those belonging to the University’s valued community.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, said the awards were an opportunity to reflect on the unparalleled efforts of many exceptional Australians.
“These awards recognise so many incredible contributions being made by staff, students, alumni, donors and other members of our University’s extensive network,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“I extend my congratulations to all those recognised in this year’s honours and thank them for their commitment to improving our nation and our communities.”

| Associate Professor Dr Kelvin Kong | 2021 Newcastle Citizenship Awards Citizen of the Year | City of Newcastle awards this title to a worthy recipient for a significant achievement or contribution made over the course of the previous year. Contributions made by the individual may bring regional, national or international recognition to the Newcastle area. |
| Dr Helen Tolhurst | 2021 Maitland Citizen of the Year | The Maitland Citizen of the Year is an award which recognises and celebrates an individual who has shown good citizenship, determination, enthusiasm and commitment through their service to our community |
| Mr John Chambers | 2021 Port Stephens Citizen of the Year | A citizen which has made a significant and demonstrable contribution to the community over the preceding 12 month period. The nominee should be an inspirational role model who has made a positive impact on the Port Stephens community. |
| Ms Elyssia Gasparotto | 2021 Central Coast Young Citizen of the Year | An individual person of 25 years of age or under who has made a significant contribution to the community. Someone who has achieved high levels in his or her chosen field and acts as an inspiration and role model to his or her peers. |
| Sharon Aldrick | 2021 Central Coast Council Arts, Culture and Entertainment | An individual who has achieved high levels of success and/or demonstrated excellence in their chosen art form. Someone who has made a significant contribution to the development of their chosen art form and/or affiliated organisations through innovative approaches and/or consistent effort. |
| Ms Sarah Anne WYLIE | Public Service Medal (PSM) | For outstanding public service to regional New South Wales, particularly to community recovery programs following the 2019-2020 bushfires. |
