Expansion of Local Government Loans Program

Peter Gutwein,Premier

The Tasmanian Government is taking the strong but necessary steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We know our state is facing an unprecedented health and economic challenge, but we can get through this.

I am conscious of the need to effectively balance Tasmania’s health, social and economic impacts as we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19, which is why we are expanding the scope of our $150 million Local Government Loans Program.

This support is just one part of the Tasmanian Government’s $985 million Social and Economic Support Package, the most significant business support package in the history of our state.

The program provides for loans over three years to local government authorities to encourage investment in and employment of more Tasmanians to upgrade, renovate and to do necessary maintenance to improve existing local government infrastructure.

To ensure the program is flexible and able to more broadly assist councils we are expanding the criteria of the program to include all measures taken by Councils as a response to, or as a result of, the impacts of COVID-19.

An updated Guideline and Factsheet for the Program are located on Department of Treasury and Finance website.
