Extension of SA free flu vaccination program welcomed

Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA)

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) welcomes the extension of the free flu vaccination program in South Australia until the end of July. Incoming PSA SA State President Veronika Seda says the move will encourage more South Australians to get their flu shot. “We know that cost is a significant barrier to many people getting a regular flu shot. Being able to deliver another month of vaccinations at no cost to the public makes a big difference,” she said.

“PSA welcomes the South Australian Government’s commitment to reducing the risk of rising influenza cases. “Community pharmacists have the clinical experience to deliver all vaccinations, including influenza vaccinations, and often have shorter waiting times than GPs, providing trusted and timely contemporary information. “Governments must continue to make vaccinations more accessible for all Australians, as well as supporting pharmacists to improve the ongoing health of their communities.

“Pharmacists can administer flu vaccine to anyone over five years of age in community pharmacies, while children under ten years receiving influenza vaccine for the first time should receive two doses, four weeks apart.

“This is also a good opportunity for all South Australians to check that they’re up to date with other vaccinations like COVID-19, MMR, and dTpa. “I urge every South Australian to get their no-cost flu shot at their local pharmacist as soon as they can and check their up to date vaccination status in conversation with their community pharmacist.” All South Australians aged 5 years and older can access an influenza vaccination at no-cost from their local community pharmacy until 31 July 2022.
