Fatal pedestrian crash to be investigated

A male pedestrian has died following a two vehicle crash in Launceston tonight. The crash was between a police vehicle and another vehicle shortly before 8.30pm.

A woman pedestrian remains in the Launceston General Hospital in a serious condition.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Higgins said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased man and the woman currently in hospital.

“A male police officer is also in the LGH with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital as a precaution. Our thoughts are also with them and their families as a result of this traumatic incident.

“A full Professional Standards investigation will be conducted into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

The investigation is in its early stages however it can be confirmed that the police officer involved was responding to a call for assistance in Summerhill under lights and sirens when the crash occurred.

Police and emergency services remain on the scene on the corner of Paterson and St John Streets.

The following roads will be closed while the crash is investigated:

St Johns Street and Cimitiere Street.

George Street and Cameron Street.

Paterson and Charles Street.

Paterson and George Street, and

St Johns Street and Brisbane Street.
