The Rockliff Liberal Government has welcomed the announcement that the Federal Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) is set to pass the Senate later this week.
Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, said it was important that the Federal Government delivered on its commitment to set up the HAFF.
“The Housing Australia Future Fund will be an important step towards providing more Australians a safe and secure home, including many Tasmanians,” Minister Street said.
“It will secure an ongoing pipeline of Commonwealth funding to support the delivery of social and affordable housing – so this is a welcome outcome.
“Importantly, our Government will work to secure Tasmania’s fair share and ensure the Commonwealth delivers on its commitment to maximise benefits for vulnerable and homeless Australians.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government’s long-term plan to build 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032 is the most ambitious housing program in Tasmania’s history, and we are working hard to address the single biggest issue in housing: supply.
“Having already established Homes Tasmania, we are ready to respond to any opportunities presented by the HAFF.
“Our Government has a strong record of delivering more homes, through the innovative reforms we’ve introduced such as the MyHome Shared Equity Program, and we have already supported over 200 households on their path to becoming homeowners.
“Our ambitious plan has already resulted in a significant boost to the workforce, with a 41 per cent increase in construction trades apprentices and trainees in training since 2018, resulting in more homes being built, sooner.
“We also recently announced the development of a new decision-making pathway to allow some planning decisions to be made by an independent expert panel rather than the elected members of a Council, taking the politics out of planning.
“There is always more work to be done, but we continue to deliver on our long-term plan and do what matters for all Tasmanians.”
