Final chapter of Weeip Park now underway

Weeip Park stage 2 beginning

The second stage of Weeip Park is taking shape with construction now underway on the children’s play area and public toilets.

Due for completion in mid-2021, Weeip Park is the first major open space in New Junction, the City of Swan’s transformational development in Midland’s CBD.

Visitors can currently access the grassed space and a dedicated youth zone including shade sails, a climbing wall, basketball goals and landscaping.

City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said Weeip Park is supported by a $1 million contribution from the Stefanelli family and $1.3 million grant from Lotterywest.

“The generous contribution from the Stefanelli family, founders of local business group Stefanelli Nominees, was made in celebration of founding director Giovanni Stefanelli’s strong connection to the Midland community since he arrived from southern Italy in 1950,” he said.

“Lotterywest have committed $1.3 million which will go towards important facilities for our young generations to enjoy, helping to build a better Western Australia together.”

“New Junction celebrates Midland’s rich history and bright future, and this generous support reinforces confidence in the City’s growth and development.”

Speaking on behalf of his family and grandfather Giovanni, Daniel Stefanelli said they have been very fortunate to be a part of Midland’s history and now take this opportunity to provide for Midland’s future, its youth.

“We’ve called Midland home for 70 years and this project represents an opportunity for more people to call it theirs,” he said.

The design concept of the children’s play space is based on the habitats of insects unique to Western Australia, and designed to inspire play, discovery and curiosity about our natural environment.

It includes a children’s area with cubby houses, a slide tower, wetland play area, climbing equipment and toddler’s corral.

A public art project is also underway at Weeip Park, with Perth artist Fieldey engaging local young people to design and paint a mural in the youth zone in January.
