The final section of pipeline has been laid for the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme, marking a major milestone for one of Tasmania’s most significant agricultural infrastructure projects.
The scheme will deliver 25,500 megalitres – that’s 25.5 billion litres – of highly reliable irrigation water each year to farming districts including Ross, Campbell Town, Conara, Barton, Macquarie, and the Lower Isis Valley through a network of more than 150 kilometres of underground pipeline.
This $217.96 million project combines $108.98 million from the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, $72.26 million from the Tasmanian Government, and $36.72 million from irrigators through the purchase of water entitlements. It will deliver long-term water security and support continued growth across Tasmania’s agricultural sector.
The completion of pipeline installation represents years of planning, consultation and construction led by Tasmanian Irrigation, the state-owned company responsible for developing and managing irrigation infrastructure across Tasmania.
The benefits of this project will extend beyond the farm gate, supporting local jobs, strengthening regional businesses and contributing an estimated $54 million annually to the Tasmanian economy.
The project has also already delivered substantial economic benefits during construction by supporting local jobs and engaging Tasmanian contractors, manufacturers and service providers throughout the build.
With the final piece of pipe now in the ground, attention turns to commissioning works and preparations for first water deliveries for the 2026/27 irrigation season.
This scheme will give farmers confidence to invest and plan for future generations, and to continue producing the premium food and fibre for which Tasmania is renowned.
