If you have ever wondered about joining a book club, Wagga Wagga City Library would like to help you find the book club of your dreams.
You Complete Me is a relaxed gathering that gives hopeful readers a chance to form a new book club or complete an existing one. It’s also a chance for existing book clubs to find a new member or two.
Wagga Wagga City Library Programs Officer Beth Harrison said joining a book club is a great way to meet new people.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded people, discover a fabulous read, and spend time with fellow bibliophiles. Who doesn’t love a book club?” Ms Harrison said.
Wagga Wagga City Library book clubs meet once a month, and what happens at those gatherings can vary from group to group.
“We have some book clubs that meet here in the library. We have other clubs that meet at cafes or pubs. Some people go to each other’s houses. Every club does what works for them.
“Some are social clubs and don’t talk much about the book, others get quite serious about the book and want to do an in-depth analysis. There is quite a lot of variety.”
That variety is one of the reasons for holding the You Complete Me event, so potential readers can find a book club that suits them.
“It’s a lovely night, very casual. We have a cuppa, a couple of bickies. We talk about how the book club program works. Often we have clubs looking for members who will talk about their club and who would fit in with them. Other times it’s just people meeting and trying to form a new book club with similar interests.”
“It’s a good opportunity for people who are new to town or people who are newly retired. People whose lifestyles have changed, or they want them to change, and people who really want to get back into reading or who just want to widen their social circle.”
Beth Harrison also said that book clubs can help people go deeper with their friendships.
“We know reading is wonderful for the soul, but it’s also the social aspect. It’s really special to connect with people over books and life and everything that comes out of that.”
“Come along, have a cuppa, have a chat and we’ll go from there,” Ms Harrison said.
You Complete Me will be held on Monday 16 November and Wednesday 20 January at 5pm at Wagga Wagga City Library. The event is free, but bookings are preferred.
