Finke Desert Race 2023

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services (NTPFES) are happy to report a mostly well behaved four days for the Finke Desert Race 2023.

Thousands descended on the Red Centre for the annual race with 127 registered vehicle participants and 438 motorcycle participants.

Police assisted event organisers when required to ensure all spectators were located within safe areas around the track over the two day race and preceding prologue day.

Over the course of the event, police apprehended 5 drug drivers and issued 12 traffic infringements notices for spectators attending the race.

Acting Commander James Gray-Spence said “While we were pleased with the majority of attendees, it is disappointing to see that 5 drivers decided to drive under the influence.

“Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence puts yourself and everyone on the roads at risk, just don’t do it.

“NTPFES personnel also supported the Finke Desert Race by providing first responders with a radio communication network, the NT Emergency Service deployed volunteers in a range of roles and the NT Fire and Rescue Service had an enhanced response capability on standby.

“Thank you to all frontline emergency services workers and volunteers who worked the event to ensure the safety of everyone on and off the track.”
