Finlay goes rogue on AFL

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

It’s no secret that North-South parochialism is exactly what’s held us back from our own AFL team for decades.

That’s exactly why Rebecca White joined with the Premier and the Greens to stand united earlier this year and deliver Tasmania its own AFL licence, once and for all.

Given that, the question must be asked – does Rebecca White endorse Janie Finlay trying to stoke divisions and play parochial games before we’ve even been granted our own licence?

Ms Finaly might want to act tough so she can laughably claim to be a ‘Champion’ on social media, but it is abundantly clear she has gone rogue and is actively undermining her Leader’s call for unity on this issue.

As we’ve made clear, the only way a Tasmanian AFL team will be successful is if it is supported across the State.

There’s no doubt that once the licence is secured Tasmanians will benefit in every region, and AFL games will be shared around the State.

Home games will be played in Launceston and Hobart and pre-season and AFLW games played right across the State, including the North West – meaning the North and North West will not lose any content, but will actually gain matches, including premiership season, pre-season, AFLW, VFL and VFLW.

And while fixturing is a matter for the AFL, of course it’s our expectation that big games will be played both in the North and the South, spreading the economic benefits in every region – notwithstanding the fact that any match with our own Tasmanian team will be a ‘blockbuster’ for all Tasmanians.

Once again, Labor are standing against progress for our State, and would clearly hold Tasmania back by saying no to everything.
