First cars to roll onto the brand new $20 million Cam River Bridge from tomorrow

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters for all Tasmanians and building safer and more efficient roads right around the State.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson said he was delighted to announce that the first vehicles will start using our brand new $20 million Cam River Bridge tomorrow with the westbound lane of the Bass Highway the first to be switched.

“Traffic heading west towards Wynyard on the Bass Highway at Somerset will be moved permanently onto the new bridge from 6:00 am on Thursday, 25 January 2024,” he said.

After the westbound traffic has been moved, we will be doing night works to widen the approaches to the new Cam River Bridge so eastbound traffic can also be switched to the new bridge in coming weeks. Information about upcoming nightworks will be listed on the department’s Roadworks Map at www.transport.tas.gov.au/roadworks

Once the eastbound lane approaches are completed, traffic heading to Burnie will be moved onto the new bridge and the old bridge will be closed for demolition.

The new traffic lights at the junction of the Bass and Murchison highways will come into operation after all traffic is using the new bridge.

The overall project remains on budget and on time for completion.

Mr Ferguson said we will provide more information once the date for the second switch is confirmed.

“Please keep to the speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.

“We appreciate your patience as we progress through the final construction stages for the new bridge.”
