First Fare Free Sunday Session kicks off this weekend

  • Free travel on public transport on the first Sunday of each month starts 2 July
  • Free travel applies to all SmartRider holders tagging on anywhere in the network
  • Fare Free Sunday Sessions boosting public transport patronage and supporting local businesses

Public transport travel, connecting more than 70 Perth train stations and thousands of bus stops in metropolitan and regional Western Australia, will be free for all SmartRider holders on Sunday, 2 July as the Cook Government’s new Fare Free Sunday Session initiative begins.

The new initiative, funded as part of the 2023-24 State Budget, will provide free travel on all Transperth and TransRegional services on the first Sunday of each month for an initial two-year trial period.

On average, more than 30,000 people take a trip on a train, bus or ferry on Sundays. The Fare Free Sunday Sessions initiative is expected to boost these numbers, while also supporting local hospitality, entertainment, and tourism businesses and providing cost-of-living relief for families.

This free travel initiative is in addition to the State Government’s two-zone fare cap, which provides help with cost of living to WA families.

Free travel will apply to SmartRider cardholders, allowing important patronage data to be collected to aid in future planning purposes. SmartRider holders will still need to tag on as normal, however no fee will be charged.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“Whenever we put on free public transport, people make the most of it and we want to see as many people as possible getting out this Sunday for our first Fare Free Sunday Session.

“Whether you’re jumping on a train, bus or ferry, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy a day out, pay a visit to friends and family, or head out for a meal and some shopping.

“Public transport connects each corner of our city, and now thousands of people can enjoy an easy and most importantly free trip on the first Sunday of each month.”
