First Social Housing Accelerator homes to get underway

NT Government

The tender for the construction of the first eight of 100 new social homes across the Northern Territory has been released.

These are the first homes to be advanced under the $50 million Social Housing Accelerator program in partnership with the Federal Government.

The first eight homes will be constructed on vacant lots in Rapid Creek, Tiwi and Wanguri, with a one bedroom and a two bedroom home constructed on each lot.

The Social Housing Accelerator will increase housing supply and ease the pressure on the social housing wait list, along with seeing a boost for local construction workforces across the Territory.

Around half the homes will be built in Darwin, with the remainder to be constructed in Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek.

They will be built to adaptable standard, meaning they are accessible and more people with mobility issues and seniors will be able to stay in the same home as they age.

Works are anticipated to commence in May 2024 and be completed in late 2024.
