Flagstaff Road widening one step closer

The widening of Flagstaff Road to a two-way dual carriageway is one step closer with an Expression of Interest released, as part of the start of the procurement process.

The Marshall Liberal Government is delivering a $33 million upgrade of Flagstaff Road, between Hyland Avenue and Bonneyview Road, to improve road safety and bust traffic congestion for locals.

For 800 metres of its overall 3.3-kilometre length between Hyland Avenue and Bonneyview Road, the road consists of only three lanes.

The project will see a fourth lane built to ensure the entire 3.3-kilometre stretch is a permanent two-way dual carriageway.

“We are delivering on another key election commitment for people in the Southern Suburbs and Adelaide foot hills,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.

“This is an important road upgrade as part of our record $12.9 billion infrastructure pipeline that will support thousands of jobs, bust congestion and improve road safety.

“Flagstaff Road is a major arterial road used by over 20,000 motorists every day to commute to work, home or other parts of the city.

“It’s one of many roads and intersections we’re upgrading around Adelaide and will also compliment the massive Darlington Upgrade that is soon to be completed creating a massive time saving for people living in our southern suburbs.”

Liberal Member for Davenport Steve Murray said the local community would be pleased to see progress on a project that they have been calling for over the last decade or more.

“At the moment the flow on the centre lane is reversed daily to cope with peak-hour traffic in the mornings and evenings which can cause confusion and is a real safety concern,” said Mr Murray.

“We’re delivering what we promised, an additional lane to create a permanent two-way dual carriageway to reduce traffic congestion, reduce confusion and improve safety.

“Motorists traveling up and down the hill will soon have a safer and more free flowing drive into work and home.”

Early works are expected to commence in early 2021, with major construction expected to commence in the first half of 2021.
