Residents and visitors in eastern parts of the state are being urged to stay up to date with weather warnings as heavy rain is forecast, bringing a risk of flash flooding in low lying areas.
The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is asking people in eastern NSW communities, including Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter and Mid North Coast, to monitor conditions and never drive through flood water.
Over the next few hours, severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding. Locations which may be affected include Taree, Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney, Penrith, Blue Mountains and Armidale.
NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said there is potential for isolated heavy falls of 50 to 100 millimetres.
“The NSW SES has prepositioned personnel throughout the region, and we are well-resourced to respond to any calls for assistance,” Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.
“We currently have advice warnings in place for heavy rainfall, which brings with it the risk of flash flooding.
“I would encourage the public to follow the advice of emergency service personnel on the ground and not to drive through floodwater.”
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
• Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
• Don’t walk, drive or ride your bike through flood water.
• If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring Triple Zero (000) if you need rescue.
• Unplug computers and appliances.
• Avoid using the phone during the storm.
• Stay indoors away from windows and keep children and pets indoors as well.
• Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.
