Road safety is in focus from 15 to 22 November, when the distinctive yellow ribbons of National Road Safety Week will fly from Victoria Police and City of Stonnington vehicles, in a show of support for the annual campaign.
The week-long initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group is an opportunity for us to reflect on the thousands of people who are killed or seriously injured on Australian roads each year, and to make a pledge to ‘Drive so others Survive!’
Throughout the week, landmarks across Melbourne and Victoria will be lit yellow – including AAMI stadium and the CityLink sound tube. And, from 9am to 10pm on Friday 20 November, all Victorians drivers are being asked to turn their headlights on, to shine a light on road safety.
City of Stonnington CEO, Jacqui Weatherill, said Council is a proud supporter of this important national initiative and is committed to making Stonnington roads safer for all road users.
“In 2018, Council adopted the City of Stonnington ‘Towards Zero’ Road Safety Strategy that, for the five years to 2023, will guide decision-making around road safety initiatives across the city,” Ms Weatherill said.
“Our goal is to reduce serious injury and fatal accidents in Stonnington and we plan to achieve this with infrastructure improvements, education campaigns and by adopting the ‘Safe System’ principles: safe roads, safe speeds, safe people, safe vehicles.
“We will continue to work with Council to identify and implement road safety initiatives to help us achieve our goal of zero road fatalities.”
National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative led by the SARAH Group, in memory of 23 year old Sarah Frazer who, with a tow truck driver, was killed in the emergency lane of a New South Wales highway in February 2012.
