The City of Melbourne has completed a repair and maintenance blitz throughout the latest lockdown.
In the past week, essential workers have focused on repairing roads, filling potholes, fixing footpaths, cleaning streets and maintaining the city’s parks and gardens.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said getting the basics right and keeping people in jobs was vital during this tough period.
“Our Citywide crews and dedicated staff have been working seven days a week to ensure Melbourne is in top shape once restrictions are lifted,” the Lord Mayor said.
“In the past week alone our crews have undertaken more than 250 repair and maintenance jobs, which highlights our focus on getting the basics right,” the Lord Mayor said.
“In the past month our crews have completed 650 jobs, including 373 jobs to repair potholes and roads and fixing 68 damaged footpaths.
“Importantly a large number of the jobs undertaken in the past month have been directly requested by the community.
“This is exactly what we want to see. We want to fix the issues which matter to residents and businesses the most and I would encourage anyone who sees a problem to report it to the City of Melbourne straight away.”
The Lord Mayor said the quiet streets created the perfect conditions for crews to perform vital maintenance and repair work, as well as ramping up waste collection.
“This month our Citywide team has collected more than 1700 tonnes of waste and 507 tonnes of recycling,” the Lord Mayor said.
“In great news for the rollout of our new food and organics collection service, we’ve collected more than 72 tonnes of food and garden waste which would have otherwise gone to landfill.”
The Lord Mayor said the City of Melbourne prioritised essential services during lockdown.
“As we come out of lockdown and restrictions ease we want the city to be sparkling to help give confidence to businesses and residents that Melbourne’s future remains strong,” the Lord Mayor said.
