Football South Australia to celebrate 100 Years of Australian Women’s Football in landmark event

Football South Australia will celebrate 100 years of women’s football in Australia on 24 September 2021 on the upcoming anniversary of the first public game of football played by women in Australia.

The centenary celebration will be held at VALO Football Centre showcasing the state’s best talent, with the entire round of Women’s National Premier League at the one venue on the same night.

To mark the occasion, each WNPL squad will be wearing a commemorative shirt encompassing a ‘100 Years of Australian Women’s Football’ logo. The shirt has been designed to mock an old-style shirt, with long sleeves and a collar.

100 Years

Each team will wear a commemorative shirt with long sleeves and a collar to symbolise the shirts worn 100 years ago.

The shirts will be revealed on social media in the days leading up to the event.

The event will be one for the whole family, with food trucks available, a MiniRoos & Junior Carnival and activities for children, which will include a jumping castle, face painting and soccer darts.

Football South Australia CEO Michael Carter said:

“Celebrating a 100-year anniversary for women’s football in Australia is a significant moment for the game. We look forward to creating a festival of activities for all to enjoy as we prepare for the final’s series on the WNPL. A great crowd is expected for what will be a great event for the code.”

Women’s & Girls Competition Manager, Marie Spagnoletti said:

“We are very excited to celebrate this landmark as a standalone event. Women’s Football has come a long way in 100 years and we are delighted to be celebrating this milestone with our clubs and stakeholders.”

“To have all WNPL clubs playing their competitive matches at the same venue will create a festival atmosphere, and with the Minor Premiership and relegation still undecided, the night could be a dramatic one.”

“I would like to thank all of our clubs for making this event possible. We will commemorate and acknowledge our history in the game and showcase the best women’s footballers in our state”
