Footpath trading opens up

City of Port Phillip
Council has options for small business owners who are thinking of venturing onto the footpath - and not only for outdoor dining.

On 15 September 2020, the Victorian Government announced support for businesses that have the capacity to trade outdoors, with a focus on alfresco dining.

In the City of Port Phillip, we have additional options for small business owners who are thinking of venturing onto the footpath – and not only for outdoor dining.

Business parklets

Business Parklets are repurposed parking bays outside your business that increase footpath trading and provide a safe, socially distanced environment for your patrons.

Businesses can apply to open up a Business Parklet at Love My Place.

Please note, businesses must fund the design, build, installation, removal and maintenance of their parklet.

Parklets will be operational until 31 March 2021, when the CEO Delegation ends for the reactivation of public space.

Permits and extensions

Earlier this year, as part of Council’s Emergency Relief Package to support businesses, we issued rebates of all footpath trading fees from 1 April 2020 until 30 June 2020.

At the meeting of Council on 19 August 2020 it was decided that this financial support to businesses be extended and these fees have now been waived until 31 December 2020.

Current permit-holders can continue to trade on the footpath under their existing permit conditions, provided public liability insurance is current for $20 million. Apply for or renew your Footpath Trading permit.
