A Wheatbelt-raised local now living in Perth is encouraging West Australians to support Cancer Council WA’s 2026 Daffodil Day Appeal, following her shock breast cancer diagnosis in late 2023, despite having no symptoms.
Kate Robertson, who grew up in York has become the face of this year’s appeal after undergoing treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer.
The 59-year-old grandmother and healthcare professional said her diagnosis came as a complete surprise when a routine screening mammogram revealed a tumour she could not see or feel.
“I had no clue that cancer was even on the cards,” Ms Robertson said.
I had no symptoms whatsoever. I checked my breasts regularly, and even after my diagnosis, specialists told me they wouldn’t have been able to feel the tumour either.
Diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in December 2023, Ms Robertson underwent chemotherapy, surgery and radiation over the following year.
Drawing on the resilience she learned growing up in a farming family, she said she approached treatment with determination.
“I’m from a family of farmers. We are pragmatists. We deal with facts,” she said.
Now cancer-free, Ms Robertson is passionate about raising funds for cancer research, which she believes played a critical role in her survival.
“I absolutely think the research that came before my diagnosis helped me,” she said.
“Without money there is no research. I’m here because of a discovery that was made 10 years ago. Who might still be here in 10 years because of the research we are funding today?
“The legacy of every donation stretches far beyond today. It will help people and families for generations to come.”
Cancer Council WA Marketing and Fundraising Director, Alischa Wunsch, said Kate’s story is a powerful reminder that cancer can affect anyone.
“Despite advances in treatment and improving survival rates, almost one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85,” Ms Wunsch said.
The discoveries we make now won’t just save lives, they’ll shape how people live beyond cancer for years to come.
“Kate is here today because research changed what is possible.
“With the support of all West Australians, we can help ensure the next person diagnosed has that same chance.”
