Four teenagers charged after incident at Youth Justice centre at Dubbo, NSW

Four teenage boys have been charged following an incident at a Youth Justice centre in the state’s Orana region last month.

About 4.30pm on Friday 9 August 2019, it is alleged staff were assaulted by four detainees at a Youth Justice centre in Dubbo.

Officers from Orana Mid Western Police District were called to the scene and found three of the boys on the roof of the facility.

It is alleged the boys, aged 16 and 17, threw items towards police as they assisted Youth Justice workers to negotiate with the detainees.

A fourth boy, aged 17, was arrested by police in the courtyard of the facility.

Corrective Services Special Operations Group officers arrived and continued negotiations with the teenagers who were detained around 6.50pm.

Two Youth Justice workers were taken to Dubbo Base Hospital with minor injuries.

On Wednesday (18 September 2019), the four boys were issued Future Court Attendance Notices for the following charges:

  • Assault law enforcement officer (not police) occasion actual bodily harm (x4)
  • Affray
  • Malicious damage
  • Use weapon to avoid detention

One 17-year-old was also charged with resist arrest. He will appear before a children’s court on Thursday (26 September 2019).

The boys remain in custody and will appear before a children’s court on Monday 14 October 2019 and Wednesday 30 October 2019.
