Four boys have been arrested after a stolen vehicle was tracked between Whyalla and Port Augusta in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A Toyota Camry was reported stolen from outside a Whyalla Stuart address sometime between 7pm and 8.15pm on Friday 25 September.
At about 1am on Saturday 26 September, Whyalla patrols sighted the stolen Toyota being driven in Whyalla. The vehicle was last seen travelling north towards Port Augusta at excessive speed.
About 50 minutes later, Port Augusta police spotted the vehicle approaching the northern end of the Joy Baluch AM Bridge and attempted to deploy road spikes, however, the driver avoided the spikes and continued into Port Augusta.
Patrols monitored the stolen car from a distance as it travelled into Port Augusta and towards Davenport before turning back towards the bridge. A second deployment of road spikes on the northern side of the bridge was successful at about 2.10am.
The vehicle then travelled south on the Eyre Highway towards Whyalla before coming to a stop a short time later.
Four boys ran from the vehicle into nearby scrubland but were quickly located hiding and arrested.
The arrested boys, aged 11, 12, 12 and 14, all from Whyalla Stuart, were charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle. All four youths were bailed to appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on 3 November.
The stolen Toyota was towed for forensic examination.
Police thank several heavy vehicle drivers who assisted officers by providing sightings of the stolen vehicle.
