Major works on the Albanese and Allan Labor governments’ Sunbury Road Upgrade are now complete, with drivers, pedestrians and cyclists set to benefit from less congestion and safer journeys – one year ahead of schedule.
Motorists can now use 14 kilometres of new lanes between Powelett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road.
Upgrading Sunbury Road to dual lanes in each direction will provide better connections to the growing local community and boost the reliability of bus services between Sunbury and Melbourne Airport.
Major works also included building a new bridge over Jacksons Creek, installing traffic signals at Francis Boulevard and Lancefield Road and delivering new shared-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians.
Since construction began in 2021, the project has created more than 400 jobs and more than 83,000 tonnes of asphalt has been laid.
The project was delivered as part of the $2.5 billion Suburban Roads Upgrade, and jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Labor Governments, with the Australian Government committing $1.14 billion.
Several other projects have already been delivered across Sunbury to transform the transport network of the growing region – including the $1.8 billion Sunbury Line Upgrade, which will allow bigger trains to run when the Allan Labor Government’s Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
