Free community event to celebrate METRONET Bayswater Station

  • METRONET New Bayswater Station project now in the final stages
  • Free community event to be held on Sunday 21 April to commemorate completion
  • Final works focussed on landscaping
  • Expression of interest process is currently progressing for a number of new retail spaces below the new station

With works on the METRONET New Bayswater Station now in the final stages, the Government has today announced a free community event will be held on Sunday April 21 to celebrate completion of the major project.

Landscaping around the station is now underway, and final rail alignment on the new northern platforms is taking place during a 10-day shut to the Airport and Midland Lines commencing on Thursday March 28.

Landscaping around the station will include the installation of more than 170 trees, and around 16,000 plants and shrubs in 4,300 square metres of new garden beds.

The New Bayswater Station project has been in the delivery phase for several years, with the southern platforms opening to passengers in October last year.

Bayswater will be the biggest train station in Perth outside of the CBD and will eventually become the meeting point for three separate train lines when the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line opens.

The new station includes four elevated platforms, bicycle shelter and parking, new bus stands and 10 new retail spaces around the base of the station.

An expression of interest process was recently undertaken for the retail spaces and assessment of submissions and proposals is currently underway.

Community art pieces will also be installed over the coming months, including one that pays homage to the old Bayswater Bridge.

The community event on Sunday April 21 will be held between 11am and 3pm and will include food trucks, live music, entertainment, rides and activities for kids and much more.

Road closures around the station will be in place, ensuring people can move safely and freely during the event.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“This has been an enormous project and one that has completely transformed the Bayswater town centre.

“I know the last couple of years have been very challenging for local businesses and residents – and I want to say a big thank you for everyone’s patience.

“During the upcoming 10-day shut to the Airport and Midland Lines, we will be undertaking work to establish the final rail alignment, which when completed will effectively mean the completion of the project.

“To celebrate the completion milestone we are holding a free community event and encouraging everyone to come down to enjoy the festivities and get a first glimpse at the incredible new station.”

Comments attributed to Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:
