School students of the Macleay Valley will be gifted free trees to participate in National Schools Tree Day and help their local environment.

Kempsey Shire Council is offering a choice of either a citrus tree, mixed seasonal vegetables or native tube stock plants to all schools in the Shire.

These free plants will be delivered to all schools in the shire, encouraging them to get involved in National Schools Tree Day on Friday 29 July.

More than 3,000 schools take part in the nationwide event that helps students learn the importance of giving back to nature and the environment around them.

Kempsey Shire Council Acting Coordinator Civic Services, Katy Rogan, said the take up from the Macleay Valley schools network is fantastic to see.

“The Kempsey Shire has forty-three schools participating in National Schools Tree Day and its great to put a focus on bush regeneration,” said Ms Rogan.

“Gifting trees to all these schools is Council’s way of encouraging participating in a worthy cause that not only helps the environment but teaches important relationships with connecting to nature and inspiring sustainable activities for years to come.”

The trees will be delivered to schools prior to Friday 29 July, so students and staff are ready to go on the day.

Founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Oliva Newton-John, National Tree Day has become Australia largest collective tree planting and environmental education event.
