Our Council nurses and immunisation staff are committed to helping the community stay safe and healthy.
This month, Council are providing free adolescent immunisations for those aged between 10 to 19 years. These vaccines are also provided by Council through the secondary school program in Year 7 and 10 each year.
Adolescents aged 12-13 years receive the following vaccines in Year 7:
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Protects against nine HPV types which cause around 90 per cent of cervical cancers in women (and the majority of other HPV-related cancers in women), 95 per cent of all HPV-related cancers in men and 90 per cent of genital warts.
Dosage: two injections spaced by a minimum of six months.
- Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis): Prevents transmission of the Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough diseases which cause serious illness such muscle spasms and breathing problems.
Dosage: one injection.
Adolescents aged 14-16 years receive the following vaccine in Year 10:
- Meningococcal ACWY vaccine: There are 13 strains of meningococcal disease, this vaccine prevents against the four more common types. Meningococcal bacteria are passed from person to person by close, prolonged contact. In a small number of people, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause invasive meningococcal disease. This can develop very quickly and causes death in about five to 10 per cent of cases.
