From Ferny Grove all the way to Mornington Island

This is the story of Constable Windsor Suen. Constable Suen was sworn into service in September 2017 and has just finished his year as a First Year Constable, during which he received a great introduction to the Service from Ferny Grove Station.

Previously a PE Teacher and then a warehouse manager, Constable Suen said he always had an interest in policing which began during high school, but only pursued the career of a police officer in 2016.

In January 2017, Constable Suen started at the Queensland Police Service Academy at Oxley in the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) program. The CALD program is a 10 week course which prepares those who come from non-English speaking backgrounds, for entry into the QPS recruit program.

Following a successful completion of this program, Constable Suen went on to complete the recruit program, however this is not when his story first began.

In 1994, Constable Suen, who was then only three years old, was with his father in Sydney. His father saw a police car and took the opportunity to pop Windsor up on the bonnet to take a quick photo.

In Constable Suen’s words, “despite being very young, I still recognised it was a vehicle not to touch or mess around with and instantly became distressed and screamed out to my dad that it was a police car and to get me off [the car] otherwise I’ll get arrested.”

“All my father did was chuckle and walked away to get in a position to take a few pictures with the old film camera.

“By that stage I was a crying mess with tears coming down my face, screaming my head off to dad that he shouldn’t have put me on the bonnet and I’m going to get arrested.”

This was the resulting photograph:

We would be crying too if we were put on a NSW Police Force car!

Now a year into his career as a QPS police officer, Constable Suen has loved his time at Ferny Grove Station, enjoying the variety of incidents to attend and locations he has visited on the job.

Understanding that there is still so much more to learn about being a police officer, Constable Suen is looking forward to his time on Mornington Island, a remote island in North Queensland. His comments from colleagues reassure him that he will learn a lot whilst in Mornington Island with plenty of opportunities to experience and understand all facets of policing.

But ever since 1994, Constable Suen has held onto this photo with the hopes of once again coming across a Holden VF Commodore – an opportunity which came on his final day at Ferny Grove Station before transferring up to Mornington Island.

We wish you all the best in your policing career Constable Suen and are glad to see that the little boy who was scared of the police car has now gone on to serve and protect his community in Queensland.

At least you found your way to the the sunshine state, Constable Suen.
