The North Woden Tennis club in Hughes is set for a significant transformation – as part of the ACT Government’s push to improve sporting facilities across Canberra.
$825,000 has been allocated to reconstruct the centre’s four hardcourts – with work on the project set to commence in the second half of next year.
“The North Woden Tennis Club has been serving the Woden community for more than 50 years. With hundreds of members, the club also has a strong focus on assisting people with a disability to play tennis,” said Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry.
Recognised as a hub for wheelchair tennis in the ACT, the club was awarded Tennis ACT’s Club of the Year and Most Inclusive Club in 2018.
North Woden Tennis Club President, Terry Lennard, says the hardcourts are a welcome addition to the growing centre.
“We have started the planning and design process and look forward to having the upgraded courts available to our members and the community as soon as possible.”
The funding boost is part of a broader plan for the territory – including a new tennis centre for Gungahlin in our North.
A brand new facility in Amaroo will include 10-12 full sized courts, hot shots courts, a hitting wall,
LED lighting, parking and a pavilion.
The Ainslie, Eastlake and Kambah Tennis Clubs will also get new LED lighting to extend playing and lesson times.
“More than 32,000 Canberrans play tennis, with the sport growing in popularity every year. The ACT Government is committed to improving our existing facilities – while continuing to develop new tennis services and centres to meet demand,” said Minister Berry.
Planning and design for the courts in Gungahlin will commence shortly – once a consultant has been appointed.
