Further consultation on greenery project

A draft concept plan proposing more greenery at North Valley Road Shopping Centre in Highton is now online for community review.

As part of a $50,000 project to make the shopping strip a more vibrant place to visit, the City wants to hear from community members who live nearby, work, shop and pass through the area about:

  • a small centre of the road pedestrian refuge with new trees, in response to suggestions of traffic calming measures and better tree canopy;
  • new trees on the east side of the road, to match west side trees;
  • a new garden bed with a mix of indigenous and native plants;
  • replanting an existing garden bed with indigenous and native plants.

The concept plan was designed based on the first round of engagement in January and February this year, attracting 751 visitors to our Have Your Say page, 69 comments on the interactive map and 35 contributions.

Themes raised during this process included plantings, traffic calming and traffic.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

The greenery project aims to make the corner of North Valley Road and Mount Pleasant Road more inviting.

The community has contributed to the creation of a draft concept that considers vegetation and greening upgrades, pedestrian improvements and accessibility.

The City wants to hear your thoughts on the plan and endeavours to incorporate this feedback into the greening project within the allocated budget.

Councillor Ron Nelson – Kardinia Ward

Planting more trees and vegetation can have multiple benefits for the community.

Council is committed to creating a healthier environment by increasing tree canopy, which will not only make the area more appealing but reduce heat and provide native wildlife habitat.

Make sure to provide feedback before 5pm on Friday 5 May 2023 and hit the ‘follow’ button at the top left of the screen to stay updated on the project.
