The Australian Government commits to working in genuine partnership with First Nations people to improve their health and wellbeing outcomes.
The Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme (PHMSS) encourages and assists entry-level First Nations students to complete their studies and join the health workforce. The scheme provides support through scholarships.
In the 2023-24 Federal Budget, the government committed $1 million to support the transition of the PHMSS to a First Nations led organisation. The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) has operated the scheme since 2002.
This transition means the scheme is designed and administered by First Nations people who have a deep understanding of the needs, aspirations and cultural considerations of First Nations students.
We are working with the First Nations health sector to start an open competitive grant process to find a suitable First Nations led organisation. The chosen organisation will take on the support of new and existing students from July 2024.
We will work closely with both the ACN and a new organisation to ensure a smooth transition. All efforts will be made so that current and new recipients of Puggy Hunter Scholarships are not affected during the transition of the Scheme.
