Future of agriculture on display at 2022 Ag Innovation Expo

Jo Palmer,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Now in its eighth year, the Ag Innovation Expo is a key networking event on the agricultural calendar, bringing together primary producers, the agricultural manufacturing sector, agribusiness and government to share knowledge and exchange ideas about ways we can further advance Tasmanian agriculture.

It is inspiring to see firsthand the future of agriculture and the important role precision agriculture plays in improving the sustainability and profitability of Tasmania’s agricultural sector.

The event is backed by Tasmanian Government funding, and last month, our Government announced a further $80,000 over four years to support the ongoing delivery of the Expo.

We continue to support jobs and sustainable growth in agriculture, and we are already well on track to achieve our AgriVision target of an annual farm gate value of $10 billion by 2050.

Precision agriculture uses digital-based technologies such as satellite, mapping, automation, sensors, data collection and processing to increase crop yields while reducing input costs and maintaining environmental assets.

New techniques and products are already being used to improve and maintain the soil health of farming enterprises around the State, leading to increased fertility, improved nutrient levels in soil and suppression of disease.

Jointly presented for the first time by the Tasmanian Agricultural Productivity Group and the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, the Expo highlights the crucial role of precision agriculture and advanced technology in helping to increase crop yields while reducing input costs, maintaining environmental assets, and providing all-round improvements in efficiency.

The Expo also demonstrates some of the new products and practices that are being used to improve and maintain the soil health of farming enterprises around the state, leading to increased fertility, improved levels of soil nutrient availability and suppression of disease.

By continuing to adopt more precise and innovative practices like those showcased at the Ag Innovation Expo, we can help minimise these impacts, meet increasing demand and improve all-round efficiency in our agricultural systems and I congratulate TAPG and the TFGA for delivering this important Tasmanian event.
