Future Ready for National Careers Week

National Careers Week provides a timely opportunity for students to consider their future career. One avenue to explore options is through the Australian Government’s Future Ready: A student focused National Career Education Strategy.

This is a student-focused strategy that will help prepare students for life beyond school and for the jobs of the future.

Due the impact of the Coronavirus we’re reimagining how we do pretty much everything right now – careers education included. The future will bring new expectations of how people work.

Children starting preschool today will engage with a different world – a world yet to be imagined. They will be asked to do jobs yet to be created, use technologies yet to be invented, and face social, and economic challenges yet to be anticipated.

Career education is the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences in education and training settings to help students make informed decisions about further study or work options and create a path to a rewarding working life.

Future Ready is a practical framework for schools, industry, career education bodies and governments to assess existing career education opportunities that will lead to a sustainable career and prepare students for changes in the future of work. It highlights existing good practice by sharing, expanding and encouraging the career education initiatives that are already working.

The benefits of career development and training are clear. High quality career education builds resilient individuals who can adapt to the evolving nature of work and manage multiple careers in their lifetime, according to their circumstances and needs.

In January 2020, a series of resources to support Future Ready were released on the schooltowork website. These resources include toolkits to support school and industry partnerships and articles for parents to have conversations about post-school studies and apprenticeships.

These resources are complemented by the work of the National Careers Institute, which seeks to ensure Australians have access to high quality career information and support regardless of their age or stage.

National Careers Week is the perfect time to think about establishing or changing your career to enable Australians to make informed decisions about their learning, training and work pathways.
