Geotab addresses a critical compliance gap for heavy haulage operators, delivering a single telematics and mass management platform
Sydney, Australia – 16 September 2026 – Geotab, a global leader in connected vehicle and asset solutions, today announced its certification has been extended to include Smart On-Board Mass (OBM) system pairing with Airtec Corporation, as the company showcases the solution at MEGATRANS 2026.
The milestone means Geotab is now able to support Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA) schemes with or without Smart OBM requirements, as well as Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) schemes, all within one unified platform – removing the need for fleets to rely on fragmented, non-integrated solutions to meet Australia’s most stringent heavy vehicle regulations.
For years, Australian heavy haulage and logistics fleets operating under heavy vehicle access schemes needing Smart OBM systems faced a strategic gap: while Geotab delivered top-class telematics, operators were forced to adopt separate systems if they wanted to enrol vehicles in schemes requiring Smart OBM. This created vendor complexity, increased compliance risk and limited Geotab’s ability to serve as a single, end-to-end compliance partner. That gap is now closed.
By combining Geotab’s GO9-LTM (Hardware variants D, E and F) TCA type-approved telematics device with Airtec’s industry-leading AXS Series TCA type-approved Smart OBM system, fleets can enrol vehicles directly into TCA schemes that require Smart OBM.
A unified platform for compliance and productivity
Smart OBM systems play a critical role in modern heavy vehicle compliance, using precision sensors to digitally measure axle group and gross mass in real time and securely transmit that data to road managers and regulators to TCA, accessible through the Telematics Analytics Platform (TAP). When integrated with certified telematics, Smart OBM systems provide road managers with high-integrity data with controls designed to detect and minimise tampering, enabling access decisions for otherwise restricted routes.
For operators, the benefits are immediate and tangible:
● Access restricted road networks: Meet TMA scheme requirements that mandate Smart OBM to unlock HML and PBS networks and routes.
● Maximise legal payloads: Carry heavier loads with confidence by proving vehicles are operating within safe weight limits, increasing revenue per trip.
● Prevent overload breaches: Real-time visibility of load weight allows drivers to identify issues before leaving the yard, virtually eliminating accidental overloading and costly infringement notices.
● Simplify compliance: Manage mass, telematics, maintenance and safety data through one platform, reducing administrative burden and training overhead.
Beyond productivity, Smart OBM also plays an important role in Chain of Responsibility compliance, providing evidence that operators have taken reasonable steps to prevent mass breaches and manage risk across the business.
Andrew Hintz, Associate Vice President, Heavy Transport APAC at Geotab, said the certification represents a turning point for heavy transport operators in Australia. “This approval completes Geotab’s Australian compliance suite and removes one of the most significant barriers our heavy haulage customers have faced,” said Hintz. “Operators no longer need to compromise or manage multiple vendors to meet regulatory Smart OBM requirements. With Smart OBM now fully integrated, Geotab can provide a single source of truth for vehicle location, identity and certified mass data – delivering regulatory confidence, operational efficiency and real productivity gains.”
Jacinta Lane, General Manager at Airtec, said the partnership brings together two best-in-class technologies to solve a long-standing industry challenge. “Airtec’s Smart OBM technology has been designed to deliver accurate, reliable and regulator-ready mass data in real time,” said Jacinta. “By pairing with Geotab, we’re enabling fleets to simplify compliance, prevent overloading and unlock road access without added complexity. This collaboration sets a new benchmark for how Smart OBM should work in practice.”
An integrated compliance ecosystem
In addition to certified hardware and telematics, Geotab supports heavy vehicle operators through an integrated compliance ecosystem, including Marketplace partners such as Prodrive Compliance, offering services like NHVR audit preparation, driver work diary reviews and assistance with “Notice to Produce” requests. Together, these capabilities position Geotab as more than a telematics provider – delivering a comprehensive safety net for fleets operating in highly regulated environments.
