Get prepped for spring hard waste collection

Council’s annual hard waste collection is approaching for Wellington residents – now is the ideal time declutter.

Council conducts hard waste pick up from residences in declared garbage collection areas which have a kerbside bin collection.

The collection begins Monday 2 September and will move across Wellington progressively each week until Monday 4 November.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Alan Hall said the annual hard waste collection was a fantastic opportunity to spring clean at home and easily throw out larger unwanted household items.

“Avoid confusion and reduce unnecessary landfill by referring to our website and take note of what you can and cannot dispose of in your hard waste,” he said.

Council reminds residents to place their items out no more than one week prior to their scheduled collection date. This keeps streets manageable and clean.

Hard waste is to be placed on the nature strip only, and clear of any utilities. Steel and scrap metal are to be piled separately, with the hard waste size limit being 1.5m3.

Residents are also reminded that E-Waste (which is any item that needs a plug or battery to work) will no longer be collected as Hard Waste.

The State Government recently determined that E-Waste is no longer permitted in Victoria’s landfills. This therefore means that E-Waste cannot be disposed of in either a 120-litre rubbish bin, 240 litre recycling bin – or during Hard Waste collection.

E-waste may be recycled free of charge at any Wellington Shire Council Transfer Station or Landfill.
