Girls in Property: Be open, be brave, be bold

Be open, be brave, be bold and draw on the people around you to help guide you, was the key message conveyed to students participating in the 2019 Queensland Girls in Property program, held at West Village this week.

Around 40 High School students, from MacGregor State High School and The Gap State High School, participated in a day-long career workshop of exciting activities, exclusive development tours and presentations from leading property industry professionals.

The Property Council Girls in Property initiative aims to raise awareness amongst high school students on the various career paths that are available within the property industry. The program’s goal is to inspire more young women to consider and choose a career in the property industry, helping to create a sustainable pipeline of talent for the growing sector.

“Our young women were pleasantly surprised by the number of career opportunities available to them through the property industry. Without attending exciting opportunities like today’s program they would still be none the wiser.” Anne McLauchlan, Principal of The Gap State High School said.

“Our students are grateful to have such a bespoke opportunity provided to them through the generosity of a wide array of industry people connected to property.” Ms McLauchlan said.

Property professionals from all aspects of the industry volunteered to support the day.

Hosted at Sekisui House’s West Village development, the girls participated in activities including virtual reality and architecture, sustainability and wellness, planning a retail marketing campaign and overseeing the establishment of a construction site.

“It was our great pleasure to partner with the Property Council Australia to host Girls in Property at West Village for the second year in a row – and to give back to our next generation of up and coming talent. said – Harrison Phillips, Senior Development Manager, West Village.

“Over half of our team (and executive team) at a project level are females – there has never been a better time to consider a future career in property as a girl.

“West Village has many facets – as a project, a precinct and professionally that continues to stimulate and challenge our talented team. The students were able to experience real-world industry exposure on the day and make life-long mentoring connections from a diverse range of Queensland’s most respected property professionals.”

This is the second year the program has taken place in Queensland, with the support of the Property Council’s Principal Partner, Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ).

“CSQ is very proud to support events like Girls in Property that help raise awareness of the opportunities for women in the building and construction industry.” Said Brett Schimming, Chief Executive Officer CSQ

“Events like this provide students with a greater understanding of what a career in property or construction might look like, and can help with some of the decision-making in the final years of high school.

“The construction industry is not just for the boys. We encourage all girls to consider whether a career in construction could be right fit for them.” Said Brett Schimming, Chief Executive Officer CSQ
