Construction of the new $28 million Glenorchy Sports Centre has reached the halfway point, bringing a new home for community sport in Hobart’s northern suburbs a step closer.
Located at the entrance to Claremont College and just a jump shot from the new Claremont Park and Ride, the centre will provide four indoor courts and modern facilities, giving the Northern Suburbs community a well-connected home for indoor sport and recreation.
Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said we’re building an even better Tasmania, delivering on our plan to invest in modern indoor sports facilities for the Glenorchy community.
“The success of the JackJumpers and now the Jewels is inspiring more Tasmanians of all ages and abilities to get involved in basketball and other indoor sports, and we need the facilities to support that growing participation,” Minister Duigan said.
“This centre will give people of all ages and abilities more opportunities to participate in sport, connect with others and enjoy being active.
“We have worked closely with local sporting organisations to ensure the court layouts support a range of sports, from everyday community participation through to competitions.
“Reaching the halfway point is an exciting milestone towards a new, modern, accessible sporting facility for this community.
“Our Government is getting on with the job and delivering the sporting facilities Tasmania needs.”
The centre will include spectator capacity for over 600 people, three multipurpose rooms, change rooms, storage, a kiosk and dedicated first aid, wellbeing, parent and sensory spaces as well as a Changing Places facility.
With local firm Fairbrother taking on the build, close to 230 contractors have been working on the centre with around 1,000 cubic metres of concrete poured and 44 tonnes of steel delivered.
The project is on track to be completed by the middle of 2027.
