Unlocking Thousands Of Homes At La Trobe University

The Carroll Labor Government is unlocking land for thousands of new homes at La Trobe University.

Minister for Economic Development Anthony Carbines today announced a historic title restriction on two parcels of land on the Bundoora campus will be removed – paving the way for around 2,300 new homes.

The site is part of Labor’s Unlocking Strategic Sites program, which fast-tracks the rezoning of underused land for new homes, jobs and investment.

The site will include a minimum of 10 per cent affordable housing, helping more Victorians find a home in Melbourne’s north-east.

La Trobe University will now progress the application and it will be subject to a full planning assessment and community consultation.

Once development is underway, up to $13.6 million from the value captured from the sale of the land will be reinvested into future projects that support the local area.

The development is expected to support more than 20,000 jobs, around 3,000 construction jobs each year and $3.5 billion in Gross Regional Product over 10 years.

This forms part of La Trobe’s broader $5 billion University City masterplan which aims to deliver around 9,000 homes across the wider precinct and improve facilities to support more than 40,000 students.

Victoria continues to build thousands of more homes than any other state and our leading reforms are making it easier to deliver them.

Jess Wilson’s Liberal-One Nation coalition have made it clear they will rip up our planning reforms, cutting 300,000 homes, creating more delays and making it harder for young Victorians to buy a home.

Only Labor will fight for working people on the issues that matter most.

As stated by Minister for Economic Development Anthony Carbines

“La Trobe’s $5 billion University City will drive investment, support thousands of jobs and create new opportunities for businesses and workers across Melbourne’s north.”

As stated by Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny

“We’re unlocking land at La Trobe University to build more homes close to jobs, education and public transport.”

As stated by Member for Bundoora Colin Brooks

“Bundoora is a great place to live, and more homes, investment and jobs at La Trobe University will create a thriving precinct for housing, education, research and innovation – benefitting the whole community.”
