Gold Coast police praise large crowds who welcomed in 2020

Gold Coast police have praised the behaviour of revellers across the coast who welcomed in the new year.

Large crowds gathered at entertainment hubs, clubs, pubs and beaches up and down the coast, as well as within the Safe Night Precincts.

Public events at celebratory sites drew large numbers of families and visitors with police pleased with the crowd behaviour with no major incidents reported.

New Year’s Eve, a traditionally busy night for police across Queensland, saw a large police operation throughout the Gold Coast with a focus on entertainment hubs and areas where large crowds gathered with police arresting 32 people on a total of 51 charges, primarily for anti-social behaviour or drug and alcohol related offences.

Some of which included nine people charged for public nuisance offences and nine charged for drug related offences. Three people were charged with obstructing police, four arrested on warrant related matters, four for failing to leave licensed premises or disobey move-on directions, and two for property related offences.

A number of banning notices and move-on directions were also issued throughout the night.

Hundreds of random breath testing were conducted with two drivers arrested for drink driving and two drivers returning positive roadside drug test results.

A number of traffic infringement (20) and public infringement notices (10) were also issued.

Gold Coast Assistant District Officer, Acting Superintendent Brendan Smith said although police were kept busy he was pleased with the behaviour of the vast majority of people welcoming in 2020.
