Staff from the Disability Royal Commission will be meeting with players from the Gold Coast Titan’s Leagueability team today, to learn about how the industry leading participation program has changed their lives.
The Titans Leagueability Program is for people with both intellectual and/or physical disabilities to play Rugby League. The Community Inclusion program began in 2018 and now supports over 60 players across four different teams.
Senior Advisor to the Royal Commission, Dr Dinesh Palipana, will be attending the engagement as well as acting as the Titans’ newly appointed Star Ambassador.
“It’s incredibly important, and a privilege, for the Royal Commission to spend time with the players and their families to hear about how being a part of the club has changed their lives.”

“Through the club we’re challenging broader public perceptions of what it means to live with a disability and we’re seeing those positive impacts not just in the lives of the players but beyond too.”
Gold Coast Titan’s Chairman Dennis Watt says it’s a fantastic to witness the growth of the players and their love for the sport.
“For some of the team members, this is the first time they’ve been involved in a sport and we’re lucky to have them as part of the club.”
“Hopefully this inspires other people with disability to take part in a sport so they can also gain the benefits, and in turn we hope our program inspires more sporting associations to develop similar programs.”
Participants at the event, including players, their family members and carers, will have the opportunity to share their stories with the Royal Commission as submissions.
The Royal Commission’s Engagement team has been travelling across every state and territory to speak with various members of the community and stakeholder groups since the establishment of the Royal Commission in April 2019.
The Royal Commission is accepting submissions until December 31, 2022.
Submissions to the Royal Commission are assisting in the creation of a series of recommendations to be included in the Final Report. The report is due to be handed to the Australian Government by 29 September 2023. Anyone can participate in sharing their views for creating a more inclusive society.
