Mark your calendars, Gone Fishing Day returns on the 8th of October to showcase all things fishing and celebrate the wealth of angling opportunities on offer in NSW.
The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) will be hosting free community events across the state, giving both novice and experienced fishers a chance to enjoy fishing fun with family and friends.
NSW is fortunate to have many exceptional fishing locations, both inland and coastal across the state, and Gone Fishing Day is a great opportunity for people to get out on the water and take advantage of these great locations.
Gone Fishing Day DPI events will be held at Port Macquarie – Town Green Park, Davistown – Restella Ave Foreshore, Penrith – Sydney International Regatta Centre, Lake Illawarra – Reddall Reserve, Narrabri – Crossing Theatre Park, and Cowra – Bill Robertson Park, with activities kicking off at 9am.
A total of 74 fishing clubs and organisations have been sent fishing packages with gear to use at their local events while another 27 clubs are receiving grants of up to $2000 to help run their events.
Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty said:
“It doesn’t matter if you’re the keenest of anglers or you’ve never held a rod before – we want everyone to get involved!
“Experienced fishers can get tips from local experts and introduce their kids to the sport by helping them get involved in the casting competitions and fishing sessions.
“Newcomers will be able to get information on how to get started with fishing, while also enjoying workshops and some free goodies.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to attract keen fishers to take to the water and share the benefits of this fun outdoor activity to everyone around the State.
“Recreational fishing is a $3.4 billion industry that supports the equivalent of 14,000 full-time jobs around our state, so it is important to acknowledge this day and the positive impact this industry has on our economy and communities.”
