Good grants news for Toowoomba community groups

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence The Honourable Shannon Fentiman

Community organisations across Toowoomba will share in more than $320,000 from the latest round of grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF).

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman shared the good news today and congratulated the 17 successful recipients.

“These grants deliver projects and services that really benefit our local community,” Minister Fentiman said.

“This valuable funding will be used for projects such as new aircraft equipment for the Darling downs Sport Aircraft Association, new gym equipment for the Allstar Gymnastics Club and a new van for Ability Enterprises.

“The Palaszczuk Government is extremely grateful for the role the organisations play in supporting minority groups, creating opportunities, and fostering community spirit and connectivity.”

Across the State almost $11 million is going to 448 not-for-profit community groups in the latest round of the program.

Tracey Scanlan, CEO of Ability Enterprises said the organisation is excited to have been awarded funding as part of the Gambling and Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) as we will use it to purchase a delivery van to assist in the collection of singe use plastics from hospitals and medical centres within a 150km radius of Toowoomba.”

“This ‘fit for purpose’ van will provide us with the sufficient load capacity for the collection of the plastic waste as part of a larger waste project which also demonstrates our commitment to truly be a responsible environmental custodian,” Ms Scanlan said.

“The van will provide our staff with an introduction into the transport and logistics industry which could inspire an interest in a career path supporting this growing industry sector in the Toowoomba Region.

“Ability Enterprises is a not-for-profit, social enterprise providing meaningful employment opportunities to marginalised individuals living in regional Queensland and this funding will make a big difference in the lives of those we help.

“It will help support an additional 45 employees and will be integral to training our Warehouse and Logistics Trainees.”

The Attorney-General reminded organisations that round 112 is open for applications until 31 October and that we are just one round away from 2022’s round 113 – the super round.

“Next year is an exciting year for the GCBF, with the first-time inclusion of a super round when grants of up to $100,000 will be up for grabs,” she said.

“I can’t wait to see the fruits of the hard work of these community groups, with a little help from their GCBF grants, in the future.”
