Good Sport Initiative – Healthy Clubs, Strong Communities

Did you know that healthy sporting clubs help build strong communities? Over the past few of weeks, Murrindindi Shire Council has been contacting local sporting clubs and groups to see how they are travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of our ‘Good Sport Initiative’.

The Good Sport Initiative will improve the future of sport within our Shire by working with local clubs to identify challenges and areas where further support is needed.

Council’s Youth and Recreation Portfolio Councillor Charlotte Bisset says we want our local clubs to be well prepared and ready to ‘return to play’ when restrictions start to ease and community sports can resume.

‘Community sport plays such an important role in keeping people fit, healthy and happy. It helps us develop strong social connections with others and makes us feel like we’re contributing to our community in a positive and meaningful way.

‘After some initial conversations with local clubs, we asked them to complete a survey, which we hope provides us with further insight into how our clubs are coping with the restrictions, how they are faring from a financial perspective and what support they need from Council and industry associations.

‘The data gathered from the survey will help us plan for the future and provide the right resources for local clubs, including grant funding and information and advice on COVID-19 participation restrictions and guidelines. We’re looking forward to reviewing the results of the survey and working with local clubs, industry organisations and other key stakeholders to support sporting communities in Murrindindi Shire’, added Cr Bisset.
