New high schools promised by the Liberals in Hobart and at Brighton are no closer to fruition.
Shadow Education Minister Josh Willie said the Hodgman Government confirmed today it had spent $300,000 on a feasibility study for a new Hobart High School but without any tangible result.
Mr Willie said at the same time a new high school at Brighton promised in last year’s election campaign looked set to become mired in problems.
“Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff needs to explain to Brighton students, parents and teachers how he intends to overcome questions of new land acquisitions to build the school after ruling out a future co-location with the current school farm,” Mr Willie said.
“Mr Rockliff said in Estimates Hearings today that he is working with the local council on a future site analysis in the Brighton area but he needs to be honest and tell the school community when and where the new school is likely to be built.
“This was a $30 million promise by the Hodgman Liberal Government and the local community want answers.
“Mr Rockliff also needs to come up with answers to serious questions about an inner city Hobart high school – answers other than the standard excuse that the project is ‘really complex’ that his bureaucrats have come up with today.
“Mr Rockliff’s claims today that a $300,000 feasibility study had concluded that Tasmanians parents and students select schools for different reasons tells us nothing new and the Hodgman Government needs to be honest about whether it will ever build this school to relieve pressure on other Hobart schools.”
