The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has coordinated the medical evacuation (medevac) of an injured crew member from a fishing trawler in the Great Australian Bight.
AMSA was notified by the WA Port Authority of the injured crew member at about 8pm (AEDT) last night.
AMSA dispatched the RAC Rescue 652 helicopter from Bunbury on a long-range mission to recover the crew member, which has now been successfully completed.
The mission flew about 1,000km and required several fuel stops to reach the fishing vessel, which was about 30km off the WA coast, near Caiguna.
AMSA’s Perth-based Challenger rescue aircraft was also on the scene providing support to the rescue helicopter.
The helicopter will transport the patient to Cocklebiddy where health authorities will coordinate their transfer into WA healthcare.
