A scramble crossing will be installed at the intersection between The Parade and George Street next year.
City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters’ Mayor, Robert Bria, said: “The Parade is the main shopping precinct in the eastern suburbs. The scramble crossing is one of the enhancements that The Parade will receive next year to increase safety and access for pedestrians, as well as amplify the street’s cosmopolitan feel.”
The scramble crossing will separate pedestrians and drivers at the traffic lights, allowing pedestrians to safely cross the street in any direction. Drivers will no longer need to wait for pedestrians to cross before making turns, improving traffic flow.
The crossing is part of The Parade Masterplan, which aims to improve access and enhance visitors’ experience along the popular main street.
“The masterplan builds on the vibrancy, culture and unique ‘sense of place’ that you experience when you visit The Parade, making it an even more enjoyable destination for shopping, or dining in first-class bars and restaurants,” said Mayor Bria, “The aim is to refresh and revitalise The Parade, as well as complement other developments taking place in the precinct.”
The scramble crossing was endorsed by the Council at a special meeting on Wednesday night following discussions between the Council and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure. The department supports the installation of the scramble crossing, right turns being prohibited from The Parade on to George Street during peak traffic times of 7.30am – 9am for westbound traffic and 4pm – 6pm for eastbound traffic, to help traffic flow.
Work on the scramble crossing is due to commence next year following formal approval from the department.
