Growing our Community Gardens

To better support and grow community produce gardens in Bayside, we’ve improved our policy that guides how we make decisions about establishing and managing community gardens.

Community gardens provide a valuable recreation activity that supports social connections, encourages sustainable living practices, and contributes to overall health and well-being.

At its July meeting, Council adopted a new Community Garden Policy following consideration of community feedback.

The new Community Garden Policy aims to encourage and assist the growth of community gardens throughout Bayside to provide a safe and fair environment for all community members to come together and grow fresh produce. The policy will ensure community gardens have a positive social and environmental impact and considers cultural safety, diversity, and access for all.

New additions to the policy include:

  • Encouraging more Community Gardens in Bayside
  • introducing a two-stage application and assessment process to streamline community garden requests
  • Council run engagement for proposals that progress to stage two of the assessment process
  • outlining the level of support Council will provide to Community Garden groups.

The policy also outlines the responsibilities of the gardeners and the Council to ensure that the gardens are well-maintained and meet the community’s needs and expectations. Council will continue to work closely with community groups and individuals to assess community garden applications, identify suitable locations, and support their establishment and management.

The new policy reflects the community’s collective vision for a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Bayside, encouraging the growth of fresh produce, promoting social interaction, and creating a thriving and sustainable community in Bayside.
