Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has granted a works approval for a waste to energy facility to be built at Dandenong South.
The applicant, Great Southern Waste Technologies (GSWT) will utilise gasification technology developed by Energos Technology AS, processing 100,000 tonnes/year of municipal solid waste (household garbage) and commercial and industrial waste, to deliver approximately 7.9 MW of electricity to the grid.
If planning approvals are granted by Greater Dandenong Council, GSWT will need to apply for an EPA licence. The facility, to be located at 70 Ordish Road, Dandenong South, is subject to stringent conditions requiring the company to have an EPA-appointed industrial facilities auditor, or alternative expert approved by EPA, verify that the final detailed design achieves environmental performance equivalent to world’s best environmental practice standards for waste to energy facilities.
EPA held an extensive public consultation process considering all views conveyed by members of the public through the consultation period.
Works Approval
Works Approvals are issued by EPA under the Environment Protection Act 1970. They are required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact.
A Works Approval permits plant and equipment to be installed, the operation of which will result in one or more of:
• the discharge of waste to the environment
• an increase in, or alteration to, an existing discharge
• a change in the way waste is treated or stored
