Guaranteeing water works: Soho Street mains replacement

Council has recently replaced and extended the water main in Soho Street, Cooma following an investigation requested by local residents. The project was finished on time and under budget. Thanks to this project, the water pressure, quality and flow-rate now meet or exceed mandated standards.

While the project extended over many months due to unusually heavy rains causing problems and delays, including the need for sections of major rock excavation, the project was completed under budget.

Late last year, several residents of Soho Street reported that they had been experiencing low water pressure for some time. Our water team responded and performed an investigation of the main running under the street, finding significant problems.

In addition, testing of the hydrant on the street showed water pressure below the level required by NSW firefighting standards. This was an important discovery that made replacing the water a main an urgent task.

Leeds was contracted to replace the main. The main was duplicated, with pipes running under the footpath on both sides of the street. This also makes future work much easier and cheaper, causing less disruption to residents. The old main ran directly under the road surface.

The flow-rate from the hydrants on Soho Street has been increased from 5.5Lt/sec to 17.7Lt/sec, which now exceeds NSW firefighting requirements.

Council would like to thank the residents of Soho Street for their patience and understanding while the work was underway. This project has ensured that their water supply is secure and up to standards for the long-term.
