The Department of Planning and Environment is calling for community feedback on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Karuah South Quarry proposal.
Director of Resource Assessments, Howard Reed, said community input is a vital part of the planning process and encouraged everyone to have their say.
“Our role is to assess this development application in consultation with local people, government agencies and stakeholders,” Mr Reed said.
“The exhibition period is a time in which we listen to all views from the community as part of our careful assessment process.”
The Karuah South Quarry Project seeks to establish and operate a hard rock quarry at a site approximately 4km northeast of Karuah, including:
- Extracting approximately 11 million tonnes of hard rock at a rate of up to 600,000 tonnes per annum;
- Processing and stockpiling quarry products onsite;
- Transporting quarry product by road; and
- Progressively rehabilitating the site.
After exhibition closes, the Department will consider all community submissions received, along with feedback from other government agencies and councils, as part of the independent assessment process.
A public meeting will also be held to inform the community of issues raised and the next steps in the development assessment process.
The community is invited to have their say by May 21, 2019.
