The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a four-day hazard reduction burn in Nattai National Park and Bargo State Conservation Area on 27 – 30 April, weather permitting.
NPWS area manager Glenn Meade said the 5,200 hectare burn is located 4 kms across the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee areas, west of the Buxton township.
“This burn will help protect the Hill Top, Buxton and Balmoral Villages and limit the potential spread of wildfire to these areas as well as provide ecological benefits to Bargo State Conservation Area,” Mr Meade said.
“Due to the size of the burn, NPWS and Rural Fire Service (RFS) will conduct it over four days with crews expected to finish on Tuesday 30 April, weather permitting.
“The burn is due to begin at about 10am and smoke from the burn may be visible in the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee area for a week.
“Motorists using Wilsons Drive, Wattle Ridge Road and the Hume Freeway are reminded to drive to conditions as smoke may impede visibility. Please observe warning signs or directions from fire crews.
“Public access to fire trails off Wattle Ridge Road will be closed during the burning operations.
“We thank our neighbours for their understanding.
“People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors,” said Mr Meade.
These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
This hazard reduction burn is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over six years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State’s national parks, where conditions allow.
